Three Writing Goals
- Goal 1- Making my writing be more fluent
In my writing in the near future I would love to make it be able to flow more smoothly and have it come more easy to me. For example, in my college essay I struggled with certain aspects of it and it took a really long time for me to have it be fully developed. Often times I will over think my writing as well and on the college essay I overthought it so much that I nearly forgot to talk about Camp Kesem, something that has been life changing for me. From now on I will actively brainstorm ideas before writing to prevent frustration and to make it just flow more smoothly to complete it at a more efficient rate.
2. Goal 2- Not to procrastinate when writing
Procrastination has always been something I have struggled with in all my classes, but I have especially done this with writing. Today I procrastinated with writing my psychology paper, I had about half an hour to work on it and instead talked about football for ten minutes and then had to spend more time gathering evidence and regain focus that I only got one paragraph done. For me to improve on this I will need to eliminate my distractions and think solely about the paper to complete it at a more efficient rate. This has always plagued me with writing and has hindered me from succeeding to my full potential, and I would love to be able to address this issue before I begin college as this will not be a good habit to have.
3. Goal 3- Learning how to start papers more easily
Another thing that I struggle with is how to begin papers. For example, I was writing a paper in my nutrition class that I take through San Juan College and I was really struggling with how to begin to allow that to feed the rest of the paper. In class I would love to learn about some techniques I can use to begin papers more easily and throughout this year I really want to see myself improving on this. For now to achieve this goal I will create an outline prior to writing because then I will know exactly how to begin and that will allow the paper to develop well from a solid introduction.
4. Revision in my college essay from first to last draft
One specific way that I grew in my college essay was when I discussed how I became interested in nursing and how Camp Kesem benefited me. In my first draft I did not discuss any of these thing and in order to convey a more powerful message including the reasons for how I became interested in nursing and how Camp Kesem has benefited me is crucial. In my first draft I talked about how healthcare became a strong field of interest, but not how compassionate medical care can make such a difference. In my second draft I talked about how attentive nurses and some doctors were to my family and I during a time of hardship, and ever since that experience I have been inspired to want to go into healthcare to provide care to patients and give compassion to families who are going through something very scary like I was given during my experience. In regard to Camp Kesem I only discussed how it benefited me, but did not elaborate on how exactly it did that. In my second draft I said that Camp Kesem has reassured me that I am not alone in my times of hardship and that difficult things happen to other people as well. By elaborating on these two things in my college essay I have conveyed a much powerful story for my College Essay, and I will continue to apply this in future writing by adding elaboration and giving specific examples when making a point.
College Essay
I haven’t always known what I wanted to do in the future. I’ve mostly been a “humanities guy” and a “sports guy” and wondered what my love of human rights issues and watching sports would provide me in the future. Although, my outlook on life has started to change in the past few years as I have been through a grueling journey consisting of parents cancer and a brother who suffered from a chronic illness known as Cyclic Vomiting syndrome.
These illnesses taught me much not only about who I am, but about what truly matters.I know life is not about how much money is made or how much prestige there is in a career, but about how much of a difference a person can make in the world. As I endured multiple medical treatments side by side with my dad, mother, and brother, I came to realize how much compassionate medical care can make a difference.
My dad passed away over a year ago and my brother passed away a little over eight months ago. Throughout this long painful journey of grief I have learned one thing and that is that I want to somehow get into the medical field to help people who are truly in need, and being able to have the satisfaction of doing that on daily basis. I first became interested in this a little over a year ago when my dad was in the intensive care unit on his deathbed at the University of Wisconsin Hospital. Throughout this very painful experience that my family and I endured there were nurses and doctors constantly tending to him and my family giving us updates and making sure we were comfortable and understanding the situation.
Attending college is not just about earning a degree so that I can get a job, it is also about making a difference in someone’s life. A year after my dad was diagnosed with lung cancer I started attending Camp Kesem. Camp Kesem is a nationwide organization run by college students and sponsored by the college designed to help kids who have a parent suffering through cancer or kids who have had that experience. I have been going for six years to Camp Kesem sponsored by Arizona State and this year became a C.I.T which gave me a lot of insight into what it would be like to be a counselor. This camp has had such a positive impact on my life that attending a college that provides a Camp Kesem is a huge priority for me. This camp has reassured me that I am not alone in my suffering and that other people have had hardships with not only a parent’s cancer, but personal difficulties as well.
The hardships I have experienced have inspired me to make a difference in people’s lives. The way I would like to achieve this is medically because I want to show people compassion when they are most vulnerable, like I was given in my most vulnerable state.

Model Senate
For this project we replicated what actually happens in the senate. We were each assigned a senator and a role to play in the senate. I was personally MIchael Bennet the Democratic Senator from Colorado, and I was a committee member in the Senate and specificaly a member of the Judiciary committee which represents Immigration. We studied three different issues Climate Change, Immigration, and College debt and debated three bills, one for each issue on the senate floor.
