Mexican Whiteboy
Seminar Reflection
By: Ethan Sullivan
Reaction: I agree with the comment Grant made about how Danny feels like
a fake Mexican. I agree with it because Danny is basically an outcast to his
dad's family and that was the point Grant was trying to get across. Also, I had
sort of a similar quote that stated "Danny is Mexican because his family is
Mexican, but he's really not Mexican. His skin is dark like his grandma's sweet
coffee, but his insides are as pale as the cream she mixes in." So I am still
thinking about that comment that he made and will probably remember it for a
long time.
Connections: A connection I had during the seminar was when Danny found out his dad was in prison and it hit him really hard. In fact he cut open his skin with tweezers. I didn't cut myself with tweezers, but when I found out my dad had cancer it also hit me really and I felt really sad and kind of mad ,just like Danny. Another reason that Danny and I are similar is that we
both don't like to show emotion and this was one of the rare times we did. That
is the connection I made during the seminar and as you can see they are pretty
similar, although I didn't hurt myself.
Self- evaluation: I feel like maybe I should stay on topic a little more
during the seminar. For example, when the group was discussing about why Danny
cuts himself all the time I brought up a quote I had and that wasn't the time
for that. I should’ve stated that quote when we were discussing our final
thoughts on the book. I felt like I did well referencing the text and adding on
to other people's ideas. For example, on our final thoughts on the book I stated
a specific quote that I referenced from the text which I thought left some
people thinking. So this is the compare and contrast to what I did well during
the seminar and what I could improve on.
Most beautiful line: I thought the most beautiful line in the book was
the quote in the book that I also stated earlier in the seminar and in the
reflection was "Danny is Mexican because his family is Mexican, but he's not
really Mexican. His skin is dark like his grandma's sweet coffee, but his
insides are as pale as the cream she mixes in." I thought this was the most
beautiful line because it really get's into the heart of the book. Also, that
quote is what the book is really about the way Danny's race plays out and how it
makes him angry. In conclusion, I wanted to say I thought this book really
defined socialization and would encourage it for next year's class.

Seminar Pre- write

1. I would say Danny has to wear two different masks. Around Danny's
dad's family he has to wear a mexican mask to blend in more and try and tell
them he's not smart even though he is. Around his mom he has to wear a white
mask and take school serious and behave. Now Uno can act more goofy and not as
serious with his mom and can go where ever he wants to. On the other hand Uno's
dad mean's bussiness whenever he comes in from Oxnard to visit Uno. Uno just has
to act more civil and behaved around his dad. Overall, those are the two
different masks between Danny and Uno.
2.
You can tell from reading this book that socialization is huge in it. Danny has
been socialized by going to the best private high school in San Diego and
growing up in a nice neighborhood. Also, not realizing how different life is in
National City. Uno has been socialized by not going to as nice of a high school
and being black. Those are the different ways of how Danny and Uno were
socialized in Mexican Whiteboy.
3. The new insights about race and economic class I gained reading this
book were how much different San Diego and National City are and how both race
and economic class differ between Danny and Uno. Also, I realized that I am
lucky to be growing up in a nice town like Durango and that I don't live in
poverty like National City. Those are some of the new insights I gained during
this unit and I realized how my socialization differs a lot from both Danny and
Uno's socialization.
Brave New world
Seminar Pre Write
1. The overall message of Brave New World is to much science can lead too bad things. Also, that wanting to much happiness and pleasure is not good for you because as John states there has to be sin to be happy because happy cannot just be perfect. And also wanting to much drugs or soma as they call it can take away your mind and not make you think properly.
2. In Brave New World there aren’t a lot of happy things although they think they are happy. Happiness to me means enjoying life and living it to the fullest and also like what you do. The quote in the book where the director says that the key to happiness and virtue is enjoying what you have to do in life and I think I can agree with that because you can have a job that makes a lot of money, bt your not happy with then what’s the of it.
3. John is trying to say that in their world there isn’t a enough pain, suffer, or emotions and that there needs to be balance. Also, he is trying to say that they make their world to perfect and that is impossible.
4. I would say about 60-70 % of our society today focuses on power and status instead of truh and beauty. I woud say this because what person today doesn’t want to be cool and have some power. For me it’s the opposite because I like having truth and having beautiful work and it’s sad our society doesn’t have it.
Seminar Reflection
During this seminar I thought Camryn really restated a good quote that I was trying to restate and add on to happiness. The quote was “But I don’t want comfort. I want God, I want poetry, I want real danger, I want freedom, I want goodness, I want sin.” I felt this was a good quote because it really explains how John is unhappy with the society he is living in and how they don’t have true happiness or freedom and that is when he had enough and just decided to leave.
In this seminar I really thought I did well on referencing the text because I had a couple of good quotes I remembered with happiness and virtue that I knew would be great for the seminar. I felt like I have come a long ways since our last seminar which I would just add bits and pieces and this seminar I really got some great points across I thought that I didn’t get across during our last seminar.
One key take away for me during the seminar was how different our society is from Brave New World’s where we have happiness, freedom, and virtue and they don’t have any of that they have soma. Our society has emotion and heart and we have feelings that Brave New World doesn’t have so I am thankful for all of the above.
For me this seminar was really trying to look at stability, happiness, and freedom and how Brave New World doesn’t have that and how ours does and differs.
