My Internship:
Malama Kauai and Regenerations International Botanical Garden

Both these organizations are non profit and located right next to each other. They deal with food sustainability and community building. Malama Kauai really focuses on education, as well, and has numerous projects with youth. My main focus with them was at their community garden, though, where I worked Tuesdays through Saturdays. Their annual seed exchange occurred while I was there, and I helped with that, too. The Kauai Food Forest is a collaboration between several food sustainability organizations It is the first of its kind on the island and is two acres long. It is designed to be totally self-sustaining so that food continues to grow. Everything in the forest is either food or supports the growth of food in some way. This video shows a tour of the food forest: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pyudDsH9sug. My main project will be with this part of the organization. I built a duck truck that can be moved throughout the food forest. It houses ducks, which help eat slugs and other "pests" that feed on the forest plants. I also be volunteered in the forest with community members every Saturday. The other part of my time was spent working at the community organic farm working with the animals and planting.
