Studio Art Song Lyric Project
Artist Statement
My painting was of the beach in California inspired by the Led Zeppelin song “Going to California”. In this song a guy suffered a tough breakup with his girlfriend and dreams of going to california to heal by the ocean and the serene of the state. In this painting I drew the beach and ocean to represent the idea of California that was being conveyed in the song. For each part of this painting I had to use multiple layers for each. The beach as well as the ocean just started off as one color of blue and one color of yellow. In order to incorporate more variety into my painting I used multiple colors to layer it effectively. When I first started this painting I just used one base color for each aspect of it and didn’t incorporate any variety into it such as drips or a mixture of colors. When I received feedback on it from multiple people such as my art teacher and some students I realized that I needed to incorporate these things into it somehow to meet the criteria of the project as well as to make it more visually appealing and engaging. This painting definitely brought out some emotions in me because this was my dad’s favorite song and I really like California. I am trying to evoke the emotions of happiness and and peace by drawing the serene of the ocean. I found this project to be very engaging and powerful by allowing us to convey something personal and passionate to us through visual imagery.
